Tulip Time in the Pacific Northwest

After months of gray skies and dreary weather, the sight of daffodils and tulips popping up in gardens, fields and farms is a delight here in the Pacific Northwest. The colorful flowers are fabulous for photography, and several of the biggest bulb growers in Washington and Oregon open their fields for photographers. Tulips start to show their color in March and the blossoming continues into May, with the big fields usually in their prime around the second and third weeks [read more ...]

3 Great Photography Shows in Eugene, Oregon

The University of Oregon is currently hosting three excellent exhibits of photography, each of which is well worth the time for Eugene residents and visitors to take in. Lone Eagle, Garibaldi, Oregon. © Rich Bergeman. Two of the shows are at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History, a small museum on the edge of campus that always has some great exhibits. What brought me to the museum most recently is the “Tidewaters” show of platinum/palladium prints by Corvallis photographer [read more ...]

Triple Play - Three Waterfalls In One Day

Spirit Falls, Umpqua Natonal Forest, Cascade Mountains, Oregon. A very scenic drive on Forest Service roads in the Umpqua National Forest will take you to a trio of waterfalls between Cottage Grove and Oakridge, Oregon.  I found conditions for photography just about perfect the other day for waterfall photography, with soft light overcast light and good water flow in the creeks thanks to recent rains. To add to the attraction, there is still a bit of fall color left in [read more ...]

"Nature of the Northwest" photo show

A selection of thirty of my scenic landscape and nature photos is currently on display in the upstairs gallery at the University of Oregon School of Law. The photographs were taken over a period of years during my many wanderings and journeys in the Pacific Northwest, and highlight some of the best locations for nature photography in Oregon and Washington. Each of the 18×24″ prints in the show were custom printed using archival inks, paper and framing materials (for the [read more ...]

Oregon Coast and Kauai Coast Top-Rated

National Geographic Traveler magazine recently rated coastal destinations all over the world, with a ranking based on, among other things, environmental health and visitor experience. I am very pleased to find that two of my favorite coasts are among the top-rated. Both the Oregon Coast and the Na Pali Coast on Kauai are, according to the magazine, “In excellent shape, relatively unspoiled and likely to remain so.” The rugged and remote Na Pali coast is one of the scenic wonders [read more ...]

Favorite Photos of 2010

I’ve been inspired by the blogs of a number of photographers who’ve recently posted their top photos for 2010, so decided to add my own to the mix. Most of the photographers post either landscape and scenic photos or travel photography. I do a mixture of both – something to do with being a Gemini perhaps? – so my selection of favorites is a combination of nature images and snaps from my travels this past year.     Early in [read more ...]
